Crooked teeth or misaligned teeth is known as malocclusion. Malocclusion affects up to 74% of American adults. Left untreated, malocclusion can lead to periodontal disease, and create abnormal amount of stress on the teeth and jaws. Over time, periodontal disease may adversely affect your overall health. For example, periodontitis has been associated with heart disease and stroke.
Straighter teeth are easier to brush and floss. Straighter teeth are easier to keep clean. Teeth that are clean and free of bacterial plaque have a lower chance of developing decay or cavities. Clean gums are less likely to develop periodontal disease.
